Software I often use to cleanup infected computers:
CCleaner (deletes temp, cookies, history, etc; you never know where spyware may hide)
AVG Antivirus (set scan to 1x month; run the initial optimize scan, or I’ve seen it cause problems)
Spybot (update, immunize, scan)
Malwarebytes (one of my favorites for removing fake antivirus software)
SUPERantispyware (I haven’t used, but hear is good)
rootkit revealer (there are a few other rootkit finders available, use at least one)
A squared (very indepth scan, slow, I usually don’t use unless the computer is very infected)
Other tools to use for more advanced cleaning:
Process Explorer (advanced version of Microsoft’s Task Manager, I like it a lot)
combofix (removes bad stuff other programs often cant)
hijackthis (shows startup items and registry entries, will find hidden bad things too; you need to manually pick and choose; this can break the computer if you don’t know what you’re doing)
autoruns (manages startup programs; you need to manually pick and choose; only use the ‘logon’ section to be safe)
gmer rootkit finder (I haven’t used)
Each scan takes between 15 minutes and a few hours…Full scans take longer.
